The Source of Origins

January 15, 2007

A few quick "news" items, for lack of a better word. Peter and I began recording a song about a week ago, and the feel of the song is pretty good, semi slow but still a really aggressive sound. We recorded everything in ableton live, it seems decent but it does take a getting used to.

Besides that, Shane and I finished the chorus to the song "Source of Origins", and I've subsequently finished mixing and tweaking the song. I'm quite please on how it turned out. The echo effect that I've got going for parts of the song, including the chorus, was basically a delay on an auxiliary track that sent it's output back into it's input, with  few other effects inline. I had a slight highpass filter going on as well, so that every time the delay reapplied, the bass kept rolling off each time and provided a really good effect.

Yeah, so check it out, and don't be afraid to give me some feedback.

Almost a month!

January 05, 2007

It's been nearly a month without updates, I took a small break but got back into the thick of things about a week ago. It feels good, but I find that I need the sporadic breaks or my creativity stifles. I get in a rut and get sick of what I'm doing, and can't fix it. The break offers new perspective and additional ways of thinking, so I'd rather be unproductive for a short time than counterproductive.

Peter recently bought a new midi controller keyboard with quite a few knobs (huh huh, knobs) which lets him tweak lots of things at once on the fly. My keyboard has 61 keys, but it has 0 knobs that can be freely assigned, unless you count the mod wheel, but you shouldn't. He also has some sort of demo version of Ableton Live and he's swearing by it. I remember when I downloaded the demo of it, I couldn't understand the workflow. I personally swear by Reason myself, but as we speak I'm downloading the demo of Live and checking it out again. Hopefully Peter can supply me with the demos that he was using to learn the program and "get it".

A few days ago, Shane and I recorded another track, and I think it's a great piece. It's called "The Source of Origins" and we talk about some wild stuff, I think it's pretty thought provoking. It's more of a poetic piece and us coming up with strange concepts, but I think it'll be a great listen by the time I'm done.

I'm going to be taking a lot more time on this one than Rhyme So Tight, but that's not to say there wasn't time spent on that track. That track was meant to sound quite rough, like we just picked up the mics and started rhyming over an instrumental, so there are no doubles, no chorus or anything, just some rhyming and talking. In The Source of Origins, I want it to be a polished piece, so I'm taking my time to listen and re-listen to it to get it just right. I've yet to write a chorus for it, but I find choruses just hit me, rather than me consciously thinking bout them to write them. I'm also fleshing out the beat so it's more than just a loop, which is all that it is right now.

I've also bought a bass tuner, I'm going to dedicate 2 hours every 2 days to playing it and learning it, wish me luck. Sorry Peter.
